How do I ship my first CMD+K assistant in 5 minutes?
Sign up at commandplusk.com, run the New Assistant wizard, add one knowledge source (a URL or sitemap is fastest), paste the embed snippet before </body> on your site, and load the page — your widget appears in the corner and the Quickstart hub marks Embed as done. Total time: about five minutes, no API keys, no backend code required for a read-only assistant.
What do you need before you start?
- A site you can edit HTML on (any framework — the snippet is plain HTML).
- A public URL or sitemap with content the assistant can ground its answers in.
- A modern browser. That's it — no API keys, no backend setup for the read-only path.
Seven steps from zero to a live assistant
- Create a workspace. Sign up at commandplusk.com and confirm your email. You land in /dashboard with an empty workspace.
- Open the Quickstart. Click 'Quickstart' in the sidebar. It tracks the seven launch steps and surfaces the right CTA each time.
- Create your first assistant. Click 'Create Assistant'. Pick a template (Support / Onboarding / Docs / Blank), name it, set a greeting, and pick an accent color.
- Add a knowledge source. Go to Knowledge → Add source, paste a URL or sitemap and tick the assistants that should see it. Indexing runs in the background; small sites finish in under a minute.
- Copy the embed snippet. On the assistant detail page, open the Install panel and copy the <script> tag with your widgetId baked in.
- Paste before </body>. Drop the snippet on any page of your site. The first time the page loads in a real browser, we stamp first_embedded_at and the Quickstart Embed step turns green.
- Open your site and ask a question. Reload, click the floating launcher, and ask something covered by your docs. The assistant cites the sources it used.
What does the embed snippet look like?
The Install panel generates this for you with your widgetId already filled in. Paste it once before the closing </body> tag on any page where the widget should appear:
html
<script
async
src="https://commandplusk.com/embed/widget.js"
data-cmdk-widget="YOUR_WIDGET_ID"
></script>Want per-user identity?
Add
data-cmdk-token="SIGNED_USER_JWT" and mint the token on your backend with the widget's jwt_secret. The end-user JWT auth page has reference code in Node, Python, PHP, and Go.What should you see when it's working?
- A floating launcher button appears on the page where you pasted the snippet.
- Clicking it opens a chat panel branded with your accent color and greeting.
- Within ~30 seconds of the first real page load, the Embed step in Quickstart turns green and shows the first-seen timestamp.
If it's not working, try this
- Launcher doesn't appear. Check the browser console for CSP errors. Allow
https://commandplusk.comas a script and frame source. - Embed step won't go green. Auto-detection requires a real browser load on a non-
localhostorigin. Deploy to a staging URL or use a tunneled domain. - Assistant answers "I don't know". Open Knowledge and confirm the source status is Ready. If it's still Indexing, wait a minute.

FAQ
- Do I need to sign user JWTs to use the assistant?
- Not for a read-only docs assistant. JWTs are required when you want per-end-user identity, write tools via MCP, or the Monetize add-on. See the JWT auth page.
- What if my docs are behind a login?
- Use Upload (file) instead of URL crawl, or generate a sitemap of public-equivalent pages. We can crawl any URL you can reach unauthenticated.
- How do I confirm the embed actually fired?
- Open Quickstart in the dashboard — the Embed step shows the first session timestamp. If it's blank after a real page load, check the browser console for blocked scripts.
- Can I customize the launcher?
- Yes. The script tag accepts data-cmdk-position, data-cmdk-accent, and data-cmdk-launcher attributes. See Install the widget for the full list.
- What does this cost?
- Nothing to start — every new workspace gets a 14-day free trial with everything unlocked, no card required. After the trial, plans start at $29/mo (AI Adopter). See Pricing & plans for the exact limits.
